Understanding monitor/printer profiles?

I must admit that the more I get into this the more complicated it becomes. To add another layer, my monitor has controls that let me adjust hue and saturation, in addition to the normal color temperature, brightness and contrast settings. Fortunately, it has a few presets and two user modes and it is easy to switch between them so that I can configure one user mode for photo editing and use the presets when I want to select the best mode for viewing on the monitor (with brightness and "punch" not achievable in a print - so far).
