Creating .mpo from an old Stereoscopic collection

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone here can give me some info.
I've been asked by a friend who has inherited a collection of Stereoscopic images (film and what seems to be acetate slides, all left and right separates) what the process of creating these images into something that could be viewed on a 3D tv (they have the latest LG 3D Cinema screen).
They asked me as I proficient with digital file formats (photoshop/aftereffects) and from what I can find out, I need to do the following:-
Scan in both Left and Right images at high res.
Use some software to create an .mpo file from these 2 images.
Play .mpo from a USB key on the 3D screen.
Can anyone recommend the software to use, and if there was preferred method for this type of digitisation? I'm using Windows 8 but also have access to an iMac.
Would this even work?
Thanks in advance,
