The real answer is, in poor light use a flash. In auto mode the camera is probably right to try to do this. Try a couple of shots with flash and you will see that the lens is sharp.

The advantage the D3100 has over the compacts is that you can raise the ISO more with less loss of image quality. Shoot by a window, keep the shutter speed up, anything less than 1/125 and you will have to be careful both that you are steady and that the subject isn't moving too muich.

The 35 1.8 is a good lens but it won't work miracles, good pictures need good light.
