Question about EF-42 Flash used externally

I've read the manuals for the EF-42 flash unit and for flash mode on the X-S1. I have one question that I can't seem to find a concrete answer for.
If using the EF-42 flash externally (not mounted on the camera), I see that if you have the in-camera setting set to "external flash" and you have the pop-up flash raised, the pop-up flash will send a signal to fire the remote EF-42 flash. Does the EF-42 have an "A" type mode where it will adjust the flash output itself with its own sensor, or does it only have a totally manual mode?
