Film can look good right out of the camera.  This was rare for me, but when it worked, it worked well.

Digital, until recent or high end cameras came on my radar screen, rarely looks good right out of the camera.  Even with a better camera, everything looks better after a little processing. Charm has to be added by the not so charming computer.

Another un-charming issue with digital is the computer screen on which it is most often viewed.  Printing can add a lot of charm.  Of course, the more charming prints are done with the more expensive processes.

Sterility, I think, is a function of sharpness and near perfection more than the median.
