D90 and D7000 are higher class than D5100. The sensor is a little better on D7000. For me may be important (since I use quite a lot the high ISO) but you may not ´╗┐have the same usage.

Look D90 at ISO 2200:

One of the first lenses I'll probably get will probably be a 50mm 1.8D for the price.

It is one of the less useful lenses. If you want a very low field distortion you can consider it (it seems that 50 mm primes have very low distortion). Otherwise it is too short for portraits and too long for general photography.
