I have had both, and kept the Tamron. For the difference in money, there was not a huge difference in IQ of the two len's which i had. This is the latest version i am referring to as well.
And how about AF speed? I am concerned about that because as you know little kids don't sit very still and they are now playing sports like soccer so I want to make sure the AF keeps up and is accurate.
I read all the reviews as well prior to getting the Sony first, and was dissapointed with the AF speed and out of focus shots i got with it. Got the Tamron, and although the focus speed seemed to be the same to me in good light, i had a whole lot more keepers which were in focus. Perhaps the copy i had was not as good as it should be, but, for the money i am happy with what the tammy gives me. Quite frankly, if i had kids in sports, i would be looking for something in the 2.8 range, not the range of the Tamron or Sony.
All my shots were done on a A77.
