Understanding monitor/printer profiles?

Back from Costco and things are clear as mud! I printed three very different images - one with lots of blue, one with lots of green, and one with lots of yellow/orange. One set was completed the right way, with soft-proofing, adjusting until the colors were in gamut, converted to the printer profile and then printed with "auto adjust" off. One set had the printer profile applied (not converted) and was printed with the "auto adjust" off and the final set also had the printer profile applied and was printed with auto adjust on. Looking at the three sets, the yellow one was best with one combination, the blue with another, and the green with the third!

Next step will be to compare all nine prints with the original three images shown on my monitor in sRGB mode and see which is most similar.
