Some A99 comments after a full day workout
Nov 9, 2012

Yesterday I took A99 out for the some hiking, with 3 lenses in my bag: CZ16-35, Minolta 35-105, Tamron 70-300USD. I used A99 for some landscape shootings as well some wildlife captures. Here are some my positive and negative comments about A99:

1) Live View - coming form A900 this is the biggest adjustment. I have to say I totally LOVE it, I actually wish Sony make bigger LCD with even higher resolution (i.e. 4" retina display). It's so easy to check my manual focus. BUT for some reason I can't check DOF accurately. For example when I used F11-16 aperture I expect most of mid-background in focus but live view doesn't show that, I still need to click shutter first and review the image to confirm everything is actually in focus. So the live view has some limitation? Perhaps I should turn "Setting Effect On", will have to try it next time.

2) AF performance - As much as people complained about A99's small AF sensor coverage, I found it's about the same as A900, and its noticeably faster too. My only problem is that these non-cross AF points are very weak to achieve AF lock. My "slow" Tamron 70-300USD zoom lens hunt like crazy when one of these weak AF point was selected.

3) Back wheel too close to thumb grip area - that caused my setting change a few times. Also both control wheels are little too loose to my liking.

4) battery life is short - I knew SLT means battery hog but I didn't expect this short: I only had less than 300 shots and battery is already below 20% form fully charged. Maybe I used lots of LCD for live view, and it was set at "sunny weather" but still that's less than 1/3 of normal battery life I got from OVF-based cameras.

5) I wish there is a direct button to switch Steady Shot "on" or "off" (like A900), but at least I can have this option assigned in one of three custom pre-set.

6) e-front curtain shutter - very nice feature for slow to moderate speed, but for high speed (1/1000 or higher) I am let to believed to turn it off. Unfortunately I can't set it "on" or "off" in custom pre-set. Firmware update wish list!

There are many features in A99 that I haven't got time to discover, and I am already quite happy with it. RAW files are clean, detailed, with lots of DR headroom. Here are some images I got form yesterday. Thanks for looking.
