Interestingly, Nik HDR Efex Pro doesn't like 3 EV spread between input images and either warns or refuses to blend them. Yes, that is apparently their position and they decided to enforce it rather than produce bad results.  So, like I said, +/-3 EV bracketing sounds good but seems to be less useful in practice.
