Suggestion for good quality color printer

Hi All:

Well, my cheap HP color printer has died. I am in the market for a new one. I am an enthusiast photographer and would like a printer which would give me good prints. I also want a printer that will enable me to scan in color.

I have looked at the tutorial here and the Epson 3880 looks really nice. Unfortunately, I would prefer to pay no more than $500.

My volume of printing color (both photographs and other) is not particularly high. I am just looking for a good quality color printer. The more distinct ink colors the better (I think).

There are so many manufacturers (and printers by each), the choice is overwhelming.
