There is an element in composition called converging lines. When you have converging lines they aid in drawing the viewers eye into the photograph. In your picture on the left 2 main lines form an V pointing to the middle, on the opposite side you have the bannister on the stairway forming a line that points toward the V on the left. These lines are leading your eye into the photo.
