Some minor NEX-6 observations
Nov 9, 2012

In case they're of interest - apologies if they're not!

  • The body isn't all-plastic as the reviews tend to indicate - the top plate is metal (apart from the popup flash top cover).  When the camera is cool and your hands are warm, it's easy to detect the quite large temperature difference between the materials, especially where the front and back panels join the top.
  • I remember somebody complaining about the annoying behaviour of the display when using the mode dial - that changing exposure mode still prompts the exact same screen showing the virtual mode dial as on the NEX-5 family and the 3 models, which obliterates the live view image and then needs clearing by hitting OK or half-pressing the shutter release - which kind of wastes the advantage of having a physical mode dial.  Well yes, it behaves that way - but only if you haven't turned off the Help Guide Display feature in the Settings menu.
  • I also remember reading that the 16-50 lens is slow to retract on power-off.  That's only the case when the camera is about to do a post power-off shutter release for automatic pixel mapping - it waits till that's been done before retracting.  Otherwise it seems about as rapid as the power-on extension.
