Bill, what is the practical impact of your findings here?

There is no real practical application.

This type of analysis gives insight into the sensor design and how firmware might be affecting raw data.

I just take photos, and am interested to know how (positively or adversely) this might affect my photography.

So there's almost certainly no impact on normal photography.

Thanks for responding. I have been processing my 5DIII files the same way I did/do my D800 files and I am not seeing much of a difference for the vast majority of them in terms of shadow noise. Which is a pleasant surprise. I know if I kept lifting, I would eventually expose the nasty read noise lurking in the Canon shadows, but so far so good with the 5DIII.
