sorry to jump into your discussion, just curious what $60 (in 1970 money) 24-70mm zooms you are referring above?

Why 1970? Why not 2005? Then you had the Sony R1 with an excellent Zeiss 24-120. More recently, Panasonic made a 14-45mm kit lens MUCH better than the 16-50. No need for software correction, good rendering, good sharpness sharpness.

In other words, it is possible to make a 1cm. long zoom lens. It's very compact, it's also horrible in IQ. There is a point in which IQ is too low, too many design compromises, brand X doesn't make it. In my opinion, the 16-50 falls in this category. Sony promised a G quality walkaround zoom for 2012, but didn't deliver. Hence the frustration.
