Using a bounce card

Both photos have the same settings. 1/125, F4.5, ISO 100, Daylight white balance. I really have no idea where I went wrong. Would the card give me a much softer light in outdoor environment or indoors with really high ceiling/no bounce-able surface nearby?

I would be most appreciative of any constructive input.
