Basic portrait photo help with rx100

I'm looking for some basic pointers in taking some portraits of my 4 year old son with my rx100. Generally speaking if I want those nice shallow dof portraits should I be shooting at the long end of the zoom at f4 say or at the wide end with f1.8 and trying to move in closer. Thanks for any suggestions.
