I don't understand what it is that photographers "need" (more likely, "want") which an E-5 and the SHG lenses cannot provide. Even 5 years ago, a Leica R9 + DMR + a couple of lenses for a cool $15,000 or so would be seen as the pinnacle of tools for the photographic artist.

For me, it was about subject isolation at f/4 - f/8.  I do a significant amount of flash photography, and typically there is one exposure to be used, especially outdoors.  There's fudge room, especially with ISO100, at the expensive of dynamic range.  There's also fudge room with focal length, at the expense of subject distance.  There's fudge room with shutter sync speed, at the expense of banding when ambient is low.

And in the end, it just makes my life easier shooting with a larger sensor.

Don't get me wrong, I produced great work for my clients with 4/3 (E-3 and SHG glass), I found and mastered all the work-arounds and pushed the "fudging" to the limits.  But I did this at my own expense - my work was harder sticking with 4/3.

There's one thing I do miss about 4/3, though.  The ZD150/2.  Probably the nicest lense I've ever used, optically near perfect, and just beautiful IQ.

Cheers,
