Well, I finally bought a new monitor and started using it today: a 24" 16:10 ASUS PA248Q, which covers 100% sRGB and is color-calibrated. I dealt with the width problem (this monitor is 22" wide while the space I had was 20" wide); this morning I took my saw and cut away the front part of one of the hutch supports. It went smoothly, but I'll need to spend some time moving things around on the desk to get comfortable with the big monitor.

Good to see you got that 24" to fit.  There is always a way.  Not much cut edge showing with the new screen in place.
