Amazon sells a compact slave flash that can be set to ignore the pre-flash common in these types of cameras. I use it with my Nex 5n (same pre-flash issue) with good success.
Neewer/Godox slave flash (about $12 US)

Hard to go too far wrong for $12 and it will let you experiment with this approach very inexpensively.
Thanks but that flash is too weak. I need a bit more power to get that rich and punchy colour.
Any way, I ended up with a Nikon V1. I don't think it's better, but it do have the same sensor size and is A LOT cheaper. Almost half price. And, as a bonus, if you set the flash to manual, it skips the pre flash.
