I have only the 28-70 and just last week the focus motor has begun to fail after 6 years of very light use.  Mike, you are correct in that it is an expensive repair and it is a well known failure mode.

It delivers fantastic images but I will not get it repaired.

Unfortunately this failure just further reinforces my opinion of Nikon gear being terrific to use but very poor for design robustness.

Anyone thinking of buying a 28-70 f2.8 secondhand should keep in mind that there is potential for failure.
