Agreed,
Hi NR does tend to create a water colour effect or smudging. I found this especially noticeable in low light situations where the scene is of similar colours.
I find medium NR or even low NR gives better all round results. Also I prefer sharpness set to hard as I've found that the combination works well for me.
Best way to learn the 30 is to experiment for your self, it soon becomes clear which settings work best.
