I've found that getting critical focus in video is hellishly more difficult without peaking. That's why it's a standard feature on high end video cameras, that's why the GH3 needs it, and that's one of the top reasons a Sony A65 is my primary video camera. The viewfinder or magnification modes can occasionally be helpful but they're not really suitable for live focus pulling.
