The purpose of most new consumer technology is to perform a task in the most efficient, cost effective and pleasurable manner possible. Thus, in photography what used to take days or hours to set-up without knowing the outcome, now takes mere seconds with near real time known results. Additionally, the manipulation of light on sensor using onboard computers permits image capture and treatment never imagined at the turn of the 20thcentury. If one can snap a comparable shot in the time it took pioneering photographers to capture historical masterpieces then such purchase decisions are justified, but sadly now blasé. Shutter speed, aperture size and media/sensor sensitivity remain the three manipulative tools, but the degree and ease to which each may be infinitely more refined continues to attract new buyers. Children’s toys serve to amuse for a relatively short time; photographic equipment, and other such adult items serve not only to amuse but to fulfill, preserve and express one’s artistic and — as Abraham Maslow once posited — self-actualized being. Of course religious, political other notables might dismiss such as trite achievements, but of course you know better.
