Thanks Turbo Hamster, yes the picture on the mantlepiece is one I took of him on his 85th birthday.

I guess my processing skills also need a little work, when I add more contrast it seems to throw his face into more darkness, but I will give it another go, thanks for your comment and advice.

I don't know what you use for your b&w conversions, but don't simply use the contrast slider to add contrast, use the colour channels and keep the yellow and red sliders up which will avoid his face getting darker

Oh, thanks for that tip I will give it a go.

The shot posted here was taken in Mono, raw image, only processing was in DPP, slight crop for better frame, converted to jpeg, and little else, I am a lazy processor, realise I need to master this art especially for portraits.  Truth is I just like taking photo's, if I won the lottery I would employ someone to do all the processing malarky!!
