Camera issue? or do I need to get my 24-70 Replaced?

Without a sample image of your test target it is difficult to comment.

Canon single direction AF detectors read in the horizontal direction.

Nikon single direction (outer) AF detectors read in the opposite vertical direction.

A target good for Canon single direction sensors may not work with Nikon single line, or the other way round.

There is some guidance on what makes a poor AF target on page 100 of your D800 instruction book.

My best guess is good results with a different (better) test target.

Your issue, if it is not a less than perfect for outer AF detection target is unlikely to be the lens as a defective in lens motor/cpu mi-focuses with all body sensors.

For what it is worth I have seen no links to an image at dpreview complaining about focus using a good for testing AF target, and 87 links complaining after using a target unsuitable for critical testing.

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge of complex modern camera equipment.
