Given that the AMD is less than half the price of the Intel, that's asking a lot. Though I see NewEgg has an Phenom II X4 965 for $100 and that will keep up with an i5.
For less than an i5, you could also look at some of AMDs eight core stuff.
How can a Phenom II X4 965 keep up with an i5? I can't find a single benchmark where the i5 isn't substantially faster.
I guess it depends on which i5's you're looking at.
The AMD Phenom II X4 965 has a Passmark score of 4394.
The Intel i5 2390T has a passmark score of 3936.
The Intel Core i5-2500S has a Passmark score of 4706.
A lot of the current gen i5's will put the AMD 965 in it's place. It does hold it's own with some of the older i5's and keeps up with modern M versions of the i5.
I'm not trying to say it's kick ass. I am saying that it is surprisingly competitive for $100.
If the i5 is too much, and you are not going to be doing any games then I would go with the i3-3225. $130 and it is usually still faster than the similar AMD processors, even with only 2 cores.
Passmark in line with the 965 and it's $30 more.
