Question about CAF with my E-5, appreciate comments.

I rarely use CAF and on those few times I have, I got decent results. But back on Oct 10 I read a comment by d3xmeister about how to set up the Oly CAF.
Yesterday I went to an air show and set the camera up the way he described. In the LCD the images looked great, but when I got home I had a very low percentage of keepers. What I discovered is that most looked sharp, but on close inspection many were slightly soft. It didn't look as if they were out of focus exactly, somehow just not crisp, although thankfully enough were that I at least got a gallery.
The only thing d3xmeister didn't mention was IS. I had used IS2 which I thought would be appropriate for fast moving airplanes and panning. After thinking about this I believe the problem was the IS. All the shutter speeds were very high as you would expect and I think I might have had better results if I'd simply turned the IS OFF. I noticed that shots made of taxiing airplanes were all quite crisp..no problem there, and the shutter speeds were a good bit slower due to the less bright conditions on the ground.
d3xmeister also mentioned the battery grip as a major facilitator of good CAF but I dont have one, and that could be a factor I guess...but never before.
I would appreciate any comments you might have based on your own experience under similar conditions.
Thanks in advance.
Bob
