what about aperture?
Aperture is also a very good powerful program. If you have a Mac it is a good alternative to Lightroom. If you want to do complex manipulations of your images you will still need something more. Aperture can do all the standard RAW settings adjustments, color balance, sharpening as well as spot fixing, cropping etc. cataloging the images, printing including a very good book template. Almost everything a person is going to do to a normal photograph. Like Lightroom it remembers changes to the RAW (or what ever the starting file is) file and you can remove and add back the adjustments without doing anything to the underlying image. Both programs also work automatically with RAW files they support, so you do not have to worry about running the image through a "developing" program first. Lightroom has a few more features like being able to add custom lens adjustments lacking right now in Aperture. iPhoto does a lot of the same things, but it has less adjustments it can do and less freedom in how books are formatted things of that nature, but it is included with new Macs.
