Not a firmware bug, it needs repaired.......

My S95 is acting the same way, it does not retain the metering mode, so I called Tech support to check and they advised it should retain metering after power off. If not then do a complete reset ........the Reset All tab is located in the Tools menu at the very bottom.
However it did not work for me and they said to send it in for a $140 repair since it is out of warranty...........which I'm not going to do but it may be an option for you since yours is still covered.
