Lens resolution how do you determine this?

I have often read that a particular lens has too low of resolution for a given camera. For example the 16mm lens does not have enough resolving power for the Nex 7 sensor. How do you determine this for a given lens. Do Contax G lenses have enough resolution for the 24 mega-pixel sensor? I read that the Sigma 30mm 2.8 lens also does not how about the 18-55 kit lens?
