Patsy, I don't think your edit was overdone. Actually, there isn't quite as much detail in the hairs on the back of the neck, but i still like it-- it lookds natural.  I noticed that getting every hair perfect is like leaving the frizzies  (or stray hairs) in a portrait.

As for gml.  I knew it was a plug in- but didn't know it was free. Looks like it is capable of  doing  pretty good job of  extracting-especially being free.

I am pretty familiar with making extractions. with Photoshop. As i mentioned, this thread was aimed at helping others   with  their extracting technique.--without success, so far....

I particularly chose this egret image,  as the hairs on the back of the neck can pose a problem if one is new to extracting.  This one, took me longer then I thought it would  to do the extraction. I think it was because of the white hairs against the grayish   background---not a lot of contrast.
