It's clearly optical (as opposed to motion blur from a faulty IS mechanism) - the way the ghost images become progressively fainter is a classic sign of internal reflections. But I don't know any way it could happen in two directions at the same time.

Spot on Steve!  That's what I can't figure out?  The ghosting both ways and yet the writing is sharp.

...and as I said when I took a closer look I could see it through the view finder as well while I was focusing before the shot
