I have never used the manufacturer's raw converter. I own several cameras, so I prefer a single workflow. Hence I now use Capture One for all my raw work.
As for storing your images on your computer... I would not recommend it. Instead I would recommend storing your images on an external hard drive (and make a backup too).
The only images on my computer are copies of images I am currently working on. All my originals are stored on external hard drives.

I have 2 hard drives, on which everything is automatic downloaded twice a week.......
I am sure you will faint, when I am telling you, that apart from family photo's and trips photo's, I don't worry at all if images which I have taken would get lost, so what, nothing is that important, I would just taking new photo's, besides I am not a horder anyway.......

a lot of it is just a hoarding mentality. How many internet photogs have you seen post that they takes 1000s of pics and havent had time to go through the last 6 months yet. it is just hoarding which in itself is anxiety based. At its root is the fear that letting something go will harm you. the same with those that NEVER delete any RAW photos. a bad pic is a bad pic. and if you have
2 or 3 great ones of a particular subject why keep the 100s of crappy ones? thats the same mentality as my wife. the iron breaks down. so we buy a new one. But she wants to keep the old one 'just in case'
