Bought my camera, now what???

So, I have been fooling around with my D5100

so, next weekend I am going to try to go shoot some industrial areas and trains

i know this sounds stupid, but what should I do? Start taking pictures, try different settings?

also, I have photoshop, but would you recommend Lightroom?
