Wow its starting to get heated in here.
One advantage of the nex 6 or any compact system camera with a pancake lens is that the portability or compactness of the camera would give you more access to places. Have you heard of places that don't allow slr cameras in as they are too pro? Some museums and galleries are known to do this. Also you might be able to sneak the camera in to certain concerts etc. That said they both have their own pros and cons. In the perfect world we can all afford to own both systems.
I'm sure such museums exist. However, most of the major museums either allow all or bar all cameras regardless of type. For example, I visited the Phil Museum of Art for the Van Gogh exhibit last spring. No cameras were allowed in the special exhibit, but all cameras were allowed in the permanent exhibits. Of course, it would be easier to sneak a a compact camera into a special exhibit (I was politely told to put away my DSLR while observing a special exhibit at the Musée D'Orsay), but when I'm taking pictures of art, I want the best quality I can get, which means a bulky prime lens regardless of camera body.
At sporting events at the local university, the limit is on the size of the lens (6") not the body.
Again, it is far easier to sneak a compact body into a concert that bars photography, but given the likely quality--or lack thereof--, I'd pass.
Right now, the Nex with the new pancake lens is the only combination that provides a significant advantage over the small DSLRs. However, neither camera is going to fit into my trouser pants pocket or my shirt pocket.
Basically, if the camera is significantly bigger than my iPhone, then between mirrorless and compact DSLRs, I'm going to put more weight on IQ than on size.
Edited: My last assertion was stated too strongly. I do recognize the size and weight savings that Nex cameras offer; that's why I've been watching Nex develop. The camera bodies appear to be fantastic. However, my frustration is that I struggle to find a quality compact lens for the camera and I fear that the new 16-50mm isn't the answer. I hope that I'm wrong
