Well, I had quite a different experience. I have been using a 40D and a 50D for quite some time now, and recently I wanted to find a good backup for my 50d,as the 40d is gone.I settled on a 600d, even though it only has one cross point af. Indeed, my testing in the shop showed me that the af system is really accurate, even when using the outer focus points, at least as much as my 50d. The only real difference is the ability to lock on the subject, which probably is better with the 9 cross type sensor. But even then, I don't notice a big difference.
So the 9 cross type sensor won't give you better accuracy, as only the center one has enhanced accuracy, but will lock more easily on the subject in some circumstances. All in all, I'm very happy with the 600d autofocus and don't regret getting it.
