To me it certainly looks more realistic than any HDR i've seen so far.. Unless you're after that specific look, or in extreme situations i don't see why you'd use HDR.
Mind you this is not exclusive to the D600/D800, i used to have a D5100 that had similar latitude at low ISO, but the latest models probably extended this to much higher ISO (with no or way little noise in the lifted shadows).
