Blew the dust off of the 28 1.4 for Halloween!
Nov 3, 2012

Hi!

Prior to the 24 1.4, the 28 1.4 AF-D got a bit of attention in this forum, especially after its production ceased. Then, is was the only f/1.4 option at 28mm and some used 28 1.4's were selling for over three thousand dollars!

I was lucky enough to have bought mine for half that, and when shooting with DSLR's that had relatively poor high ISO performance, it came in handy.

Ambient night time light in Times Square:

1/40s f/1.4 at 28.0mm ISO 400

However, since getting the D3 and, more recently, a D4, I found myself using the 28 1.4 a lot less. Also, I was reluctant to haul it around, since it is not replaceable, at least for a reasonable price/

I still will use it if the light is very low or if I want to blur the background more than I can with the 24-70 f/2.8:

Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/250s f/1.6 at 28.0mm iso1600

From what I've seen, the 28 1.4 lacks the "microcontrast" of some of the newer lenses. But contrary to what many have written, it really is reasonably (but not outstandingly) sharp for an f/1.4 lens:

1/1600s f/1.4 at 28.0mm iso1600

However, those who focus on criticizing the 28 1.4 for its relative lack of sharpness or light falloff at the corners at wide aperture, miss the point. This lens is about sucking up the light, having good control of comma aberrations of point light sources, and of course, subject isolation.

Anyway, I spent a little time out on the street Halloween, initially with the 24-70.

But I wasn't happy with the slow shutter speeds at ISO 6400, didn't want to raise the ISO any higher (though of course I could), and the flash (when I was using it) overwhelming the ambient light, even on it's lowest setting (-3.0 ev TTL was sometimes blasting the subjects)

So I went back to the car, and popped on the 28 1.4 and was happier!:

Nikon D4 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/320s f/1.6 at 28.0mm iso3200

Nikon D4 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/125s f/1.6 at 28.0mm iso3200

Nikon D4 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/320s f/1.6 at 28.0mm iso3200

Nikon D4 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/200s f/1.6 at 28.0mm iso3200

Would the 24 1.4 have done a better job? Maybe/probably.

But I don't have one, and the 24 1.4 could not have taken all the pictures that I took with the 28 1.4 five years ago!

Nikon D200 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/80s f/1.4 at 28.0mm iso800

Nikon D70 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/20s f/1.4 at 28.0mm, ISO800

Best Regards,

RB
