Hi I too am looking for  entry-level DSLR as well as looking at the D3100 check out the price for the D5100 you can get a really good deal on them at the moment

I also have been looking at the Sony a37 its smaller than your average DSLR and punches well above its class you can pick them up between $500-$600 with kit lens and Sony has a pretty good 50mm f/1.8 lens you can get cheap. This is the bit I like as I am also on a tight budget you can put the old Minolta lens on the Sony

Sorry I'm not that good on the tech language but its worth having a look
