You shot all the cameras with the same exposure parameters. The 5D2 is the least efficient sensor so therefore recorded less light and actually had a smaller actual exposure than the other 2 cameras. The end result is the sun is better defined as it is less clipped.

Absolutely.

It was a mistake. But it told me something we all already know. When things get real tough, no sensor is good enough. We need to resort to special techniques, such as appropriate filter or HDR.
