I know the Nikon is the better lens, but is it worth the extra $600+ now that Tamron has an image stabilized alternative? I have a D90....looking to step up at some point (tempted by the D600 but have too many DX lenses). I would use it primarily for travel and family. Right now, I use either my 18-105 or one of my primes (35 1.8, 50 1.8, 85 1.8) but I was always envious of the 24-70 2.8.

Thanks for your help on this!

I have never shot with the Nikon 24-70 but my most recent lens purchase was the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC which I use with my D7000.  I had to return my first copy because it was very soft across the whole image.  The second copy is fantastic!  One of my best photography investments ever.

Sharp, excellent focus, and great color rendition.  It is thick and heavy but is a perfect match for my gripped D7000.  I can see how it would be huge on a smaller body without a grip.

I am really happy I picked it up.
