I am not sure whether this applies to the NEX cameras, but for the P&S (small sensor) cameras Sony have changed the standard jpeg compression (8-bit/pixel) to a so called “intelligent” jpeg compression sometimes in 2006. Some pixels are coded with 2-3 bits only.  The first camera using this “improved” compression was H9 (I think) and was widely criticized.
