I've tried a few on-screen keyboards but was never really happy with them, though some do implement very interesting ideas.
Then I found that Graffiti - which I got on well with in the Palm Pilot era - is back.
"Graffiti for Android" is now my first choice for screen input, on 10", 7" and my SmartPhone screens.
As I recall, initially it appears to have a severe learning curve, but soon becomes "retroactively intuitive".
