Shutter Induced Focus Tracking of A99 - a much more useful feature over A77
Nov 2, 2012

The Focus Tracking ability of A99 has improved over A77 in that the Focus Tracking can be triggered nearly immediately by half pressing the shutter. There are two advantages of this:

  1. Focus tracking is at last more practical now since in A77, by the time you press the focus tracking button again to trigger it, the subject might have been gone;
  2. Focus tracking can be used to compose -- use multiple focus point or three zone focusing, lock onto the subject and move the camera and the focus would still be on the same site.

However, the very BIG BUT is the focusing points are all clustered too tightly into a relatively small part of the central screen -- what a shame for such useful function cause the subject can get outside the focusing point very easily and the GREEN color associated with correct focusing would turn yellow, telling u that you have lost your focus. I hope that can be further improved in A99s . In addition, the speed of acquiring correct focusing is OK but not great. I suppose you know Focus Tacking needs AF-C which is very smooth and reasonably accurate.
