need advice on new camera

Yesterday at a photo exhibit (mine) I promised an amateur photographer that I'd recomend a new camera for him.  Problem is that I am a D800 and a D3s user who has limited knowledge of the newer entry level SLR cameras.  My first thought was a D7000 with a 18-200 walk around lens.  However, once I started looking I got quickly confused.  I read up a little on the new D3200 and also was curious about the D5100 as well.  Can anyone please give me something to consider based upon knoweledgable comparisons between the cameras at that end of the spectrum?  I think he would like to keep the price down to $1000 or less.  Thanks for your help.  Please only consider cameras that are now available.  I know that there are new ones coming (there are always new ones coming).
