Day 1 with A99 (compare with A900)
Nov 1, 2012

Other than some flash shots I did last night, today I took A99 and A900 out for about 40 minutes (that's all the break I got, raining all week) to test which camera is better for my landscape shooting needs. Nothing scientific just my typical way of doing things: tripod, cable, Steady-Shot off, ISO 100, pattern (average) metering, local AF or manual focus (if I can).

First thing first, I much prefer A900's OVF, EVF is so dark: almost black out in shadow area but I know by experience camera will capture good amount of details. So I ended up using fold out LCD with "sunny" brightness setting which worked out well.

Now to the image quality: there is no doubt that A99 has more dynamic range than A900, I am getting almost HDR kind of image with well preserved highlight, tones of shadow detail just a matter of gentle lifting under Adobe RAW convertor, my worries for excessive CA (due to SLT mirror) was mostly unfound. The biggest surprise to me, is that A99 has more "layered" image than A900, maybe lighting condition happen to favour A99 but I like what I am seeing so far.

Another quick comment for A99 build quality: not as solid as A900 (even my Canon 7D crop sensor body is better built than A99), the joystick is little too far stick out make it not as easy/quick to use as A900/7D but I can get use to it.

Here are two set of images, top one is A900, bottom one is A99. They have been processed under my typical routine (straiten, crop, slight sharpening, gentle tone curve, etc.) and both camera RAW files were treated roughly same degree.
