I have this problem with my 7D, but I am using the original fw from 2 years ago.  I thought my grip was the problem, but the same thing happens without the grip.  I'm speculating it's a bad logic board.  I think the Canon knows about this issue and the refurbs you bought may have been the cameras returned from previous users who were unlucky enough to buy these duds.
