Chromebook vs Surface vs iPad

There are so many choices it gets confusing. I was thinking about getting an iPad mini for my grandchildren for Christmas but it is so expensive compared to others of similar size.

I don't know about the Kindle. I hear you're really locked into Amazon, and that it has a very slow browser.

I own a Nexus 7 (which I love), and am wondering if I should get it for the kids. They do love and use FaceTime though.

Any thoughts?
