I have sent a question about the numbers on fujifilm.com support, but no reaction at all. I think, that if they really have had this problem solved they would have no problem to reply - but - as I've said - they are silent.
No company would provide such numbers in a formal statement, so I don't know why you bothered asking them. Honestly, all companies that make things have failure rates; give me one example of a company that has published them.
Given the "problem" was by all accounts sorted out about a year ago, that to me would be a very good reason to be "silent".
I remember many companies which had acknowledged, published and repaired free their failure - Toyota in last years and - which is ridiculous, that you don't know it - even Fuji - X10. So why are you so astonished?
If the problem was sorted out a year ago - why I bought defective camera a half year ago? Old supply? But why - when they sorted it out they didn't withdraw all old defective products?
Read what I said. You said you were asking Fuji *for the numbers* of affected units. I said, give me an example of a company that publishes *the number of defective units*, not an example of a company that has issued a recall like Toyota (where they may be obliged to state the number of affected units as part of a safety recall). But a recall is specifically what we are *not* talking about here, because Fuji has not recalled the X100. They are fixing the issue, where it happens.
And I'm well aware of the X10 and the orbs issue. Did they publish the number of X10s affected?
In your specific case, we've already ascertained that the camera you bought was nearly a year old at the time you got it new because you said it was a 12xxxxxx serial number, i.e. built April-June 2011, and you bought it in March 2012. It's impossible to say now how that came about and it's pointless speculating.
Honestly, I've investigated companies on exactly this kind of thing *for a living*, it's not like I'm trying to be an armchair expert here.
